Introduction

Lightmatter_gerenuk.jpg
Welcome! Gerenuks are among many of the animals we humans barely get to know about, but in this website you can learn about their cool and mysterious ways. After times of people hiding them from us, scientists and people from all over the world have finally been able to save them.

Description

The Litocranius walleri, mostly known as the famous Gerenuk, Is a mixed breed of Giraffes, who lives mostly in the swamp areas and forests of North America. These vicious creatures, whos name comes from the word "Giraffe necked" from the Somali language, stand about 89 to 105 centimeters in males, and 80-100 centimeters in females. They live until the age of 13, so their life span is small. Most males are about 200 pounds, while females are about 40-120. An estimated of about 95,000 of them are left, so fortunately they are not extinct, but they could in the future. Its head is very small for its body, but its eyes and ears are pretty large. They have a coat that is brown on the upper back and lighter in the back. These creatures might seem sweet and cute, but these animals can be pretty dangerous. They can definitely defend themselves, for example they have ways of leaving their trails behind to find their way back from a place they used to be. When people see these around, they might mistake them for an ear, but its freakishly long neck will have the person know its a Gerenuk.

Diet
Gerenuks have an interesting way of eating, but they are both carnivores and herbivores. They like to feed on grass and bushes, and mostly animals such as foxes, wild dogs and cheetahs. However, their only predators are humans. Thankfully, they do enjoy feeding on plant bushes. In fact, when they feed on tall bushes they erect on their hind legs and their long neck extended to browse the food around that plant, during this they can reach up to 16-18 feet above the ground. They do not require water since the bushes and thorns they feed on already give them that benefit. Occasionally, they will eat jars of Nutella, which is their most favorite. However they will very energetic afterwards.. They can actually survive in dry and desert areas if they wanted to. They will not hurt humans, unless a human attempts to hunt it or kill it, if that attempt fails, the human could be killed could be killed. Most of the time they are herbivores, unless they get very hungry then they will feed on meat.

Mating
Gerenuks have a really interesting way of mating. For the males, having a child is an honor, so in order for the female to have a child they must go on an ultimate quest of killing for the female to give them the honor of a child. From most studies, its said that they must kill about 10 species of animals around them, many times the males do not make it to have those children, as they die on their attempt. Many of the times, the female has more than one baby Gerenuk. The typical baby Gerenuk spends the first weeks of its life hidden in a bush waiting for their mother to feed them. Occasionally, the mothers will not want to feed the babies, and in result they die.

Defense
Gerenuks have very hightened senses, therefore hunting them is very hard. Although, many strong hunters have been able to catch them. There are other very strong wild animals that can hunt them which is why they have a tendecy to hide their scent and command territory. For example, they have preorbital glands in front of their eyes that emit a tar like, poisonous substance that marks their territory. If touched could burn and sting terribly. They also have scent glands on their knees that are covered by tufts of hair and their split hooves that cover their scent, in case any predators are nearby.
